Repairing Electric Vehicles After a Crash in NZ: What's Different

Why EVs need special handling

High-voltage battery packs (400V–800V) must be isolated and inspected by a qualified EV technician before any structural work. A nicked battery cell is a fire risk for weeks after the crash.

OEM-approved networks in NZ

Tesla has a small Approved Body Shop network in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Polestar uses Volvo's approved network. BYD and MG repair through their NZ distributors.

Using a non-approved shop voids the battery warranty and may invalidate your insurance.

Expect longer repair times

EV repairs commonly take 4–8 weeks vs 2 weeks for a comparable ICE car — parts come from overseas and ADAS recalibration is mandatory after any structural work.
