How NZ Car Insurance Claims Work for Panel Damage
Step-by-step: lodging a claim, paying the excess, choosing a repairer, and what happens if you're not at fault.

Step 1 — Lodge the claim early
Call your insurer the same day where possible. Most NZ insurers (AA, AMI, State, Tower, Vero, Cove) have 24/7 claims lines or mobile apps.
Have your policy number, the other driver's details, photos and a brief written account ready.
Step 2 — Pay the excess
Excess is your share of the claim — usually $400–$1,000 depending on policy and age. You pay it directly to the repairer when you collect the car.
If you're not at fault and the other driver is identified, your insurer will usually refund the excess once they recover from the at-fault insurer.
Step 3 — Choose your repairer
Most NZ insurers let you nominate your own panel beater, though they may ask for a second quote. Preferred-network shops are pre-approved but not always the closest or best for your vehicle.
Frequently asked
Will a no-fault claim affect my premium?+
Usually not — insurers track at-fault claims separately. Always confirm with your insurer in writing.
Can the insurer write off my car?+
Yes, if repair costs exceed the insured value (or roughly 70% of market value). You'll receive a cash payout and the wreck goes to a salvage auction.
